When you get into working with real estate agents, you may notice that almost without exception they are bright, friendly, positive people. At least, that is how they at first appear on the surface. Beneath it all, they are a very mixed bag of different issues, insecurities, and clumps of rage which hide themselves while they are trying to make a sale. For a lot of real estate agents out there, they are not working for you. They are working for a commission. If you are okay with this, just remember it whenever they say something.
Just like all of the other types of sales professionals, real estate agents will always at least sugar coat the truth. Most will even lie from time to time, just to make sure that the sale gets made and that their commission check goes through. No matter what they may say, you have got to double check it against facts which can be verified. If they fudge a little bit on the square footage, the neighborhood, or any other tiny detail, this is basically to be expected. They are sales people, after all.
When you speak to someone who is working for a check that they are only going to get if you sign a few pages, and you are not paying them directly, you have no direct control over what they say or do. These people are self employed, and they are not working for you. While they will continue to be very spritely and friendly to you, it is just a facade that they have up so that they can work for their commission. Keep this in mind, and you will never end up surprised by them.
